Shopify Store Profit & Fee Guide
Estimate Shopify payment processing, plan allocation and order profitability with independent tools.
Shopify store profit depends on payment processing, subscription allocation, shipping, product cost, discounts, advertising, refunds and apps. The Shopify Profit Calculator estimates payment fees and allocates a monthly plan cost across expected orders.
Shopify costs to track
Include your subscription, online card processing, any applicable third-party transaction fees, shipping and fulfilment, packaging, apps, advertising and returns. Processing rates depend on plan, country, payment method and eligibility.
Contribution profit
Subtract product landed cost, payment processing, shipping, discounts, advertising and variable expenses from sales revenue. Track fixed overhead separately so revenue is not confused with profit.

Shopify costs: subscription, card processing and third-party fees
A Shopify store does not have one universal per-order marketplace commission. Model the recurring plan subscription separately from payment processing and any transaction fee that applies when you use an external payment provider. The rate depends on the plan, country, card type, online versus in-person payment and eligibility.
Costs that are easy to overlook
- Monthly or annual plan cost, domain renewal and paid themes.
- Online card processing: a percentage plus a fixed amount per transaction.
- Third-party transaction fees where applicable if Shopify Payments is not used.
- International card or currency conversion charges, chargebacks and refunds.
- Apps, subscriptions, shipping labels, fulfilment, packaging and returns.
- Advertising and creator costs required to acquire each order.
Allocate fixed costs correctly
Divide the monthly subscription and recurring app costs by a realistic number of paid orders, not an optimistic sales target. If the store receives 50 orders in a month, a $39 monthly plan allocation is $0.78 per order; at 200 orders it is $0.195. This allocation is a management estimate, not a fee Shopify deducts per order.
Worked payment example
For a $50 online order, a hypothetical 2.9% + $0.30 card rate produces $1.75 in processing before any other charges. Add the plan allocation, product landed cost, fulfilment, apps, returns and customer acquisition to estimate contribution profit.
